PetSmart Charities Celebrates 11 Millionth Pet Adoption in Milestone 30th Anniversary

PetSmart Charities®, a leading animal welfare funder in the U.S., recently celebrated an incredible milestone—its 11 millionth pet adoption—just in time for its 30th anniversary and National Adoption Week (Oct. 21-27). The milestone adoption took place at a Philadelphia PetSmart store, where Jon Pepper, a Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority bus driver, adopted Sammy, a lovable dog who instantly won his heart. Sammy, who joins Pepper’s family after the recent loss of his beloved Chihuahua, Penny, has now become part of a long legacy of pets who have found homes thanks to PetSmart Charities’ efforts.

“After a rough day, my dogs are there to greet me, making everything better,” said Pepper. He instantly knew Sammy was meant to join his family. Now, as the 11 millionth adopted pet, Sammy’s story shines as a testament to PetSmart Charities’ mission of bringing families and pets together.

Celebrating the Impact of Partnerships and Pet Adoptions

Since its inception, PetSmart Charities has worked closely with local animal shelters and rescues to connect pets with loving families. Instead of selling cats and dogs, PetSmart fulfills its founders’ promise to support animal welfare by facilitating in-store adoptions. Heidi Marston, Director of Pet Placement at PetSmart Charities, expressed gratitude for the countless families that have welcomed pets into their homes. “We’re grateful for our local shelter partners who provide compassionate care while pets wait for loving families. This 11 millionth adoption milestone represents our mission’s impact.”

As part of the celebration, Hill’s Pet Nutrition awarded Sammy and Pepper a year’s supply of pet food, while PetSmart granted Pepper VIPP (Very Important Pet Parent) status in its Treats Rewards Program through 2025. "We hope this National Adoption Week inspires more families to adopt and help animals in need," said Courtney Suthoff, Director of U.S. Communications and Shelter at Hill’s Pet Nutrition.

National Adoption Week: A Lifeline for Overcrowded Shelters

The 2024 Hill’s Pet Nutrition State of Shelter Pet Adoption Report underscores the urgency of adopting pets, as shelters across the U.S. face unprecedented overcrowding. Last year alone, 6.5 million animals entered shelters, many waiting for extended periods before finding homes. With local shelters experiencing prolonged stays for pets, adopting through PetSmart Charities can help relieve overcrowding and give shelter pets a chance at a better life.

National Adoption Week invites prospective pet parents to PetSmart locations nationwide, where they can meet adoptable pets, from cats and dogs to small animals, brought in by local shelters and rescues. Each adoption not only changes a pet’s life but also supports the tireless work of shelters that strive to provide happy, healthy environments for animals awaiting homes.

A Legacy of Compassion and Commitment to Animal Welfare

For 30 years, PetSmart Charities has pioneered in-store adoptions, helping pet lovers find their perfect companions. This year’s National Adoption Week is a reminder of the continued need for compassionate pet adoption. With the support of partners like Hill’s Pet Nutrition and thousands of shelters, PetSmart Charities aims to inspire more families to welcome a pet, just like Jon Pepper did with Sammy.
