Why Alyssa Mages thinks you need an intervention
After 17 years in clinical practice in two countries, 6 practices, and multiple disciplines, Alyssa Mages, BS, CVT has seen the good, the bad, and the ugly of Vet Med. It’s the latter that she’s spent the last few years of her clinical life working to improve, and the reason she founded EVT with her partner Caitlin Keat, BS, MSM. Together, the two are working to improve the knowledge base, training & coaching, program development, and overall culture of veterinary medicine in practice.
Most recently, the EVTeam has joined with Incentive, a certified coaching company founded by a former Vet Tech to stage an intervention. Vet Candy is excited to be sponsoring their week of wholeness, technical trainings, and sense of community.
This free event will be providing 3.5 hours of RACE approved
CE hosted by 8 RACE approved instructors.
So, what does it mean that they are staging an intervention? As you may have seen in your own practices there is a disconnect between job performance and career growth. There is you the clinician, and you the person, and never the two shall meet. There is an overwhelming flood of patients and cases every day that only leave enough time to react. Alyssa and Caitlin want to change all of that.
The pair believe that you cannot separate who you are inside the clinic and who you are outside. They believe that to truly grow your team and your practice we need to address this dichotomy. There are three focus areas of this week that will help to address the gap. The first is that when we conduct clinical training we need to do so with mental awareness. This includes awareness of the trainer, the learner, the environment, and the implementation of the training. The second is that we need to make more time., for ourselves and our team members. While this may seem impossible with the crush of cases it is vital. This time, used wisely, will help your team to decompress, address concerns and move forward. It will help to avoid mistakes and less mistakes help to reduce your future workload. The last focus is area is regular, consistent & supportive feedback and recognition. When we recognize our teams for a job well done, they strive to do more for us the next time. However, don’t fall into the trap that recognition needs to be a huge award, often times a very heartfelt thank you from a respected colleague carries the most weight.
This requires a culture change which is simple to say and hard to enact. Both Alyssa and Caitlin have helped to drive this in their careers and know what it takes to accomplish it. To affect change requires long term commitment and these two are here to help you in this journey. They are so committed to this change that they’ve put in countless hours preparing this week for you free of charge. Alyssa and Caitlin know that they can’t make this happen without all of you and they hope you’ll join them on this journey.
The free event will occur between February 7-13 and brings to bear several experts including another incredible partner of EVT’s and VetCandy’s - GetMotiVETed. Dr. Quincy Hawley and Renee Machel, CVT join midweek to cover wholeness & wellbeing and how that impacts our daily life both in and outside of practice. Jen Dryburgh a Registered Yoga Teacher with more than 500 hours of yoga teaching (RYT 500), a reiki master and a Vet ER nurse for more than 11 years starts the week with some self-care. She will lead attendees through a 20-minute yoga to soothe the soul.
Katie Ford joins the team from the UK bringing international insight into the week. She is a locum veterinary surgeon and founder of her own veterinary consulting company. She is passionate about Imposter Syndrome and will review how to cope when you doubt your accomplishments and expertise.
You’re probably familiar with virtual medicine as you take your care of your own health, but this hasn’t yet taken VetMed by storm. Jenica Veley is helping to lead the change in veterinary medicine as the founder of Virtual VetTechs. She’ll bring the technical training to this week as she gives an overview of how this can help in your practice, especially as we all react to new COVID protocols.
Our hosts will cover Training and Fierceness and end the week with a wrap up and a vision for the future. On Tuesday join Alyssa and Caitlin as they dig into what training really is, how to do it well, and most importantly how to be a good trainee yourself. Shanna Mcalarnen, of Incentive, will help us all find our fierceness as she discusses mindset. Shanna will cover why what you do off the clock is the foundation to what you do on the clock.
To make this experience even more enjoyable the week will be filled with giveaways and discount codes for some of the team’s favorite small businesses. Don’t worry they receive no kickbacks through this as affiliate earnings. They all believe whole heartedly in small business and using your power to empower others. So join them as they empower your veterinary team!
