Five ways to get organized

An organized life makes it easier for you to manage your time, stress, and assets. Organization can help you in surprising ways. When you have less clutter, you are no longer tuning out your surroundings and it is easier to think clearly. When your day is organized, you can move through it efficiently without wasting time wondering what it is you need to do next.

If you're ready to get organized, here are 5 steps to help you get there.

Give Everything a Place

The average person loses 2.5 days of their life every year simply searching for lost things. On top of being incredibly frustrating, it can also make you late for work or other important meetings. By having everything in its place, you won't lose those days or have to go through that frustration and embarrassment. Take the time to sort everything out, label boxes, and give each item a defined place.Your time in organizing will be paid back with dividends.

Keep Only What You Need

As you are going along sorting things, you might notice quite a few of your possessions are things you haven't used in 10 years—or ever. If you haven't used it in years, chances are you don't need it. Get rid of things you don't use. By clearing out the stuff you don't care too much about, you will have more room for the things that you do need and want.

Write Things Down

It's not just your physical items that can benefit from organizing. Write down your daily tasks and long term goals, so you know what it is you are striving for. By keeping these things in the forefront of your mind, you won't forget, and it will also help you stay on task.

Use your “Dead Time”

Commuting to work or waiting in a line often take vasts amount of our time and serve us no other purpose. You can fill this time by listening to an audio book, learning a new language through a language CD, or a training CD. If you're cleaning, you can combine quality time with the kids by inviting them to chat with you while you work, or getting them involved.

Track your time

Most of us have habits that cause us to use our time less effectively. Have you ever gone into your bedroom to make the bed, spotted dirty laundry on the floor and switched to doing laundry, only to notice your laundry shelf needs organized and started that? By the end of the day you might have a dozen started projects, and nothing done.

The same can happen in almost every field of our life. By tracking what we do with our time and noticing when we do it, we can be more effective with our time.

Organization is valuable no matter what aspect of our life we are trying to improve. By coming up with a game plan for every area of your life, you can get more out of your time.
