Check out our new guide to vet school!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Veterinary school is known to be one of the most challenging and demanding professional programs in existence. Mental health issues have a concern in the profession, especially with the younger generation. In fact, according to a 2011 study by Kansas State University, veterinary medicine students are also more likely to struggle with mental health issues than their human medicine counterparts, with more than one out of three students showing signs of depression during their first year.
“Vet school is challenging both mentally and physically,” said Shannon Gregoire, veterinary student at Western University, “Now we are also dealing with additional challenges from the global pandemic” says Gregoire.
That’s why Vet Candy and GetMotiVETed have teamed up to create the Vet Candy Guide to Vet School.
The guide focuses on physical, emotional, and financial wellbeing for students entering or already enrolled in veterinary school.
Gregoire, a third year veterinary student, contributed to the guide. She says, “I am honored to be a part of this wonderful initiative. I think that having this advice, early on, can help the next generation of veterinary students create a balance in their lives.”
Other contributors to the gude include. Dr. Courtney Campbell, an award winning veterinary journalist, Dr. Merrill Simpson, a 2019 graduate of Colorado State and experts Bryan Gum, a Certified Financial PlannerTM, Caitlin Kiarie, a registered dietician and nutritionist, and Dr. Dara Querimit, a licensed clinical psychologist.
“Get MotiVETED is proud to support the wellbeing of veterinary students and veterinarians,” said Dr. Quincy Hawley, co-founder of Get MotiVETed and contributor to the guide, “we hope this guide provides support not only during school but throughout their professional careers.”
