Zero waste decoration ideas

How we are treating the environment has become a topic of huge concern for the majority of the world. Decorating itself can seem frivalous when you know that all those fake fall leaf garlands, wreathes, and plastic goards that will have to be stored or thrown away when the season is over.

Luckily, there is an abundance of wonderful DIY options for fall that will allow you to enjoy the beauty of the season without trashing the planet all at the same time. Here are some wonderful fall décor ideas that are easy and beautiful too.

Forage for your décor

Autumn leaves are a beautiful reminder of the season. Collect a long stick, and use twine to string them for a beautiful piece of wall art. Pine cones, nuts, berries, and evergreen branches can all be beautiful adornments as well. These are all beautiful, free, and can be composted at the end of the season.

Decorate with edible gourds

Squashes are beautiful and come in a variety of shapes and colors. They also remind us of fall. Instead of using fake replicas however, consider decorating with long storing edible squashes—and then eating them as needed and replacing the supply. Seasonal pumpkin or butternut squash soups are also a great reminder of the season, and just as festive as the gourds themselves.

Decorate with food

Apples, grapes, nuts, and other seasonal produce can also make for beautiful arrangements, and can be replenished as time goes on. When the season is over, simply eat what is left over, or compost it if some has gone soft. By eating your décor or composting it, you'll have had a rich and festive season without any waste.

Celebrating the holidays doesn't have to mean choosing between a beautiful home or a beautiful planet. You can have both with just a little forethought.
