Three tips for turning your weekend into a mini-adventure

You don't actually have to go on an African Safari of visit a Tibetan monastery in order to feel like you've done something incredible. Nor do you have to spend an entire week in order to go on an adventure. Mini-adventures are things you can do on the weekend that will turn even the most ho-hum locations into a spectacular experience.

Check what's close

Most people have never toured their own city, even if they've been to other tropical destinations. There is probably a lot near you to see or experience, even if you live in the middle of nowhere. Check out local hikes, geographical features such as caves, national parks, and of course interesting cities, parties, and events.

Ideally, find something that excites you. Maybe you've never been whale watching and you happen to live near some of the best whale watching in the world. Maybe you found a birding club and want to give it a try. You never know until you go.

Don't talk yourself out of it

One of the reasons why vacations are more fun than weekend trips is because once you're there, heading home isn't so easy. Treat your mini-adventure like a confirmed vacation, and don't talk yourself out of it because there isn't a $700 non-refundable ticket on the line if you don't. It's easy to not go or turn back when home is right there, but it may sabotage your adventure.

Incorporate your lifestyle

Your adventure doesn't have to be something outside of your comfort zone. It could be biking to work instead of taking the car. If you're passionate about dogs, it could be visiting a dog show or even entering one! The path to success can be an adventure all on its own.

When you take the time to get to know the area around it, to experience it and love it, you will find a weekend feeling more like a vacation. You'll be able to come back feeling rested and ready for the 9-5, something you probably don't get out of a normal weekend.
