Caity Lewis is ready for a change
It’s no secret that people, especially vet techs, are leaving the vet industry in droves. “Help wanted,” signs are posted in nearly every vet office, and it can be a struggle at times to deal with both a surge in veterinary needs along with a constantly changing staff.
Caity Lewis is in a unique position to solve that problem. An RVT herself, she realized the reason why many vet techs were leaving involved lack of appreciation, few opportunities for advancement, and being forced to do the same job relentlessly.
After speaking with many veterinarian technician associations about the problem, Caity realized the only way to bring real help to the industry and change it from the inside out was to start her own business. She created Evolve Veterinary Consulting.
Now Caity spends her days advising veterinary technicians in how they can change to better themselves, helping them obtain advanced certifications and make them feel their value on what they can offer.
No stranger to trouble
In 2016, Caity had a roller coaster year that fundamentally changed her. She experienced the loss of her brother, a difficult divorce, and finally the discovery of her soulmate. It was a hard year, but also one that made her feel more bold and daring than she ever has in her own life.
She changed her name from Caitlin to Caity, and has since used that adventure year to change how she acts in life, hoping to be bold in all of her actions from now on.
A Passion for Art
If Caity could no longer be a Vet Tech, she probably would go down the path of art and photography instead. At one point she even worked for a photography company Coady Photography, which focuses on horse racing photography.
She also at one point had her own side business as a photographer, but now that she has her own business and also teaches as an adjunct instructor at Tulsa Community College Veterinary Technology Program, she no longer does so.
Problems in the industry
Caity is well aware of the biggest problems facing the industry, and is working hard to change all that. She believes that underappreciation for the field, both inside and out, is a pervasive problem. The average person doesn’t see veterinary medicine as ‘real’ medicine, when in reality it’s often harder to diagnose on patients who can’t tell you their symptoms.
She’s working diligently to help change this attitude through her consulting firm, but meanwhile that stigma still remains. Her consulting firm helps give Vet Techs a firm direction, including what advanced certifications will work best for them, and what resources are available.
Caity Lewis is an amazing and passionate vet tech, consultant, and teacher. She knows how tough the vet industry can be, but also knows that encouragement can go a long way to helping people reach for the stars. She hopes to eventually make the veterinary industry a respected one, with decent pay for everyone involved in bringing animals care.
