Meet the veterinarian that wants to make the future brighter for foster kids
Dr. Stephanie Jones is an inspiration in many ways. Most recently, she launched Pets Help the Heart Heal, a non-profit organization that offers foster children the opportunity to learn about veterinary medicine through action learning.
“We designed Pets Help the Heart Heal events to allow youth of all ages to learn about veterinary careers,” said Dr. Jones. “More importantly, the unconditional love these kids receive from the animals give them a reason to smile.”
Organizations that participate in the program include PACE Center for Girls, SOS Children’s Villages, Voices for Children and 4KIDS. Dr. Jones partners with Canine Assisted Therapy to provide animals for the event.
The program allows kids to experience a day-in-the-life of a veterinarian. The interactive platform gives real life experiences of giving a physical exam, reading x-rays, and learning about medical devices. Dr. Jones also invites groomers, kennel attendants, and trainers to attend the event and talk about their career choices.
Dr. Jones, a native of Arkansas, received her veterinary degree from the University of Florida. She is a co-owner of the Animal Hospital of Fort Lauderdale. In addition to her work with Pets Help the Heart Heal, she also mentors at-risk teens once a week.
