Three people who changed the world
When dealing with enormous global problems such as global warming, extreme poverty, and crime, it may seem like no matter how careful we are with our lives it won't make a difference. Switching off the lights when we go to bed might be good for our electric bill, but when you think of how small your personal impact is on a global scale, it really doesn't make much of a difference.
Many people who want to see a change in the world give up at this point. After all, even if you gave up your job, sacrificed everything, and spent your days doing nothing but feed the homeless—there would still be homeless. So what even is the point?
Believe it or not, it is possible to change the face of the planet as just one person. Not only is it possible, it's been done dozens of times. Here are just 3 people who single handedly changed the world.
Rosa Parks
Everyone remembers the name of Rosa Parks, an african-american woman who refused to give her seat up on the bus to a white person. Her single action spurred a revolution that ended segregation. When she refused to give her seat up, big things were at stake. The bus driver threatened to have the cops called to arrest her. She said to the bus driver, “You may do that.”
Her single action galvanized the black community into action, and their protests hastily brought about changes in the laws that would later open the way for ending segregation. Imagine if she hadn't what the world might be like today.
An Unknown Protestor
No one knows the name or the fate of a bold man, carrying the days shopping in his hand, faced down a tank in Tiananmen Square. He stood in the way of the tanks, and when they made an effort to go around him, he calmly stepped back into their path.
Just the day before, the Chinese government massacred protestors in Tiananmen Square in an effort to quell the protests. Largely known as Tank Man, he successfully kept the tanks at bay until he was dragged away by members of the crowd.
While who he is, and whether he survived that day are unknown, his actions have rippled through history ever since.
Tim Berners-Lee
What would the world be like today if we had no internet? Tim Berners-Lee invented the internet we know today when he combined the concept of hyper-links with the already established connections that were the beginnings of the internet.
His solution turned what was merely connected computers into a browsable “World Wide Web” on top of this, he didn't patent it, but left it free for everyone to use and enjoy as they saw fit.
There are many more people like Rosa Parks, Tank Man, and Tim Berners-Lee. If you believe in yourself, there is nothing you can't accomplish, even if you have to change the entire world to do it. If you have a dream, a belief, or see something that needs fixing, be the change you want to see in the world. It will make a difference.
