ProEfficacy of inhaled steroids administered via inhaler

Researchers evaluated thirty-six client-owned dogs to determine the efficacy and feasibility of inhaled administration of corticosteroids in controlling cough in dogs with noninfectious airway disease using an AeroDawg inhaler for dogs.

Dogs with existing cases of inflammatory airway disease, diagnosed through bronchoalveolar lavage cytology or airway collapse, diagnosed through bronchoscopy or for radiographic changes in airway diameter, or fluoroscopy, were used in the study.

For 32 dogs, the quality of life (QOL) score was significantly lower at the end of 6-weeks of treatment compared to the beginning of therapy, with a median change of 69% in QOL score. Cough frequency, duration, and severity were significantly decreased at study end.

Feasibility of aerosolized delivery improved with continued use with only 1 dog unwilling to use an inhaler for therapy.
