Effects of intramuscular combinations of hydromorphone, acepromazine, dexmedetomidine, and glycopyrrolate followed by inesthesia in healthy dogs

Researchers evaluated the sedative and cardiopulmonary effects of various combinations of acepromazine, dexmedetomidine, hydromorphone, and glycopyrrolate, when followed by anesthetic induction with propofol and maintenance with isoflurane in six healthy dogs.

In the study, the dogs received 1 of 4 IM combinations in a crossover design with 1 week between treatments: hydromorphone and acepromazine; hydromorphone and dexmedetomidine; hydromorphone, acepromazine, and dexmedetomidine; and hydromorphone, acepromazine, dexmedetomidine, and glycopyrrolate.

Sedation scores were not significantly different among treatments. Mean cardiac index was significantly higher for the hydromorphone and ace-romaine and hydromorephone, ace-romaine, dexmedetomidine, and glycopyrrolate treatments than for the other treatments. No ventricular arrhythmias were noted with any treatment.

The study suggests that in healthy dogs, IM administration of acepromazine, dexmedetomidine, hydromorphone, and glycopyrrolate before propofol and isoflurane anesthesia could be used with no adverse effects.
