Acute monoblastic leukemia in a feline leukemia virus-negative cat
A 12-year-old female domestic short-haired cat was presented due to weight loss, anorexia, and tachypnea. The complete blood count revealed severe anemia, leukocytosis with massive undifferentiated blast cells, and thrombocytopenia.
Bone marrow aspiration showed acute myeloid (monoblastic) leukemia, based on cytology examinations. SNAP tests for feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) both came back negative. A feline leukemia virus and feline immunodeficiency virus pro-viral polymerase chain reaction test using the bone marrow aspirate also came up negative.
The cat was treated with doxorubicin, cytosine arabinoside, and prednisolone, but the anemia did not improve without blood transfusions. The owner declined further treatment. The cat died two months post treatment.
