Assessment of cardiac function using ambulatory acoustic cardiography

A study evaluated the use of an acoustic ECG monitor in horses as a noninvasive way to calculate indices of cardiac mechanical activity and hemodynamics.

The study involved continuous overnight recordings and analysis of ECG and acoustic cardiography in healthy horses.

Recordings of diagnostic quality were obtained in 116 horses. 44.8% of the horses had atrial premature complexes, 4.3% had ventricular premature complexes. S3 was significantly more often graded ≥5 (scale 0–10) in younger compared to older horses.
