Could stress be a factor in atopic dermatitis?
Researchers evaluated surveyed 343 owners of dogs with chronic atopic dermatitis and 552 dog owners with healthy dogs. The study showed that pruritus severity in dogs with chronic atopic dermatitis was associated with increased frequency of unwanted behaviors, such as mounting, chewing, hyperactivity, coprophagia, begging for and stealing food, attention-seeking, excitability, excessive grooming, and reduced trainability. These behaviors are often considered indicative of stress.
