SHOCKING: The hidden link between diabetes and hypertension in cats! You won't believe what this study reveals!

A new study focuses on cats with concurrent disorders of diabetes mellitus (DM) and arterial systolic hypertension (SH). Researchers conducted a retrospective longitudinal study on 17 cats with DM and SH, examining their medical records between January 2011 and December 2021. The cats' comorbidities, including chronic kidney disease and hyperthyroidism, were recorded, and the treatment success of arterial hypertension was assessed.

Findings revealed that the majority of cats with DM and SH had other documented concurrent illnesses that could contribute to SH, such as chronic kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, and functional adrenocortical masses. Amlodipine was the most common medication used for treating SH in these cats, and its introduction led to a significant decrease in systemic arterial blood pressure (SABP) levels.

The study emphasizes the importance of evaluating cats with DM and SH for the presence of other underlying conditions like chronic kidney disease and hyperthyroidism. Treatment with amlodipine was found to be effective in lowering SABP in these cases, highlighting its potential benefit in managing arterial systolic hypertension in diabetic cats.
