Morehead State's Veterinary Tech Program Gets Major Overhaul: New Labs, Classrooms, and Bigger Opportunities for Students

Morehead State University (MSU) is revamping its Veterinary Technology program facilities as part of a broader campus revitalization plan. The upgrades will be made to the Derrickson Agricultural Complex, where the program is housed, with an expanded building to improve laboratory and classroom spaces. The renovations are expected to be completed by December 2025.

Kim Oatman, assistant vice president for facilities and operations, explained that the existing facility required improvements to meet the growing needs of the program. The updates will include the addition of two new classrooms, new restrooms, and a common lobby for student gatherings. The building’s exterior will also be upgraded, and essential systems like electrical and plumbing will be modernized to accommodate the changes.

Dr. Amy Staton, an associate professor of veterinary technology at MSU, highlighted that the additional classrooms will allow the existing space to be dedicated to clinical experiences, such as small animal dentistry and surgical preparation. This expansion could also enable the program to accept more students each year, further solidifying its reputation as one of the best veterinary technology programs in the country.

"The expansion will support the educational experience of our students and help us train more highly qualified veterinary technicians to meet the growing demand in the profession," said Staton. "Veterinary technicians are vital to the field, and MSU is committed to meeting the need for skilled professionals."
