From ER Vet to Holistic Healer: Dr. Christine Pedranghelu’s Wild Ride in Veterinary Medicine!

Dr. Christine Pedranghelu has never been one to follow the traditional path. From working with exotic animals to pioneering holistic treatments in veterinary medicine, her career has been anything but ordinary. She’s practiced in California, Florida, and now New York, experiencing nearly every corner of the veterinary world—emergency medicine, zoo and aquatic animal care, small animal general practice, and now, holistic medicine.

Four years post-graduation from Western University of Health Sciences, she’s taken everything she’s learned and poured it into her own mobile holistic veterinary practice. Her approach? Treating every patient like her own pet, with a focus on natural healing, preventative care, and whole-body wellness.

"Veterinary medicine is evolving," she explains. "People are more aware than ever that there are alternatives to conventional treatments. My goal is to provide pet owners with options that focus on long-term health, rather than just treating symptoms as they come up."

Her journey from traditional medicine to holistic care has been a transformative one, shaped by personal experiences, deep compassion, and an unshakable drive to make a difference.

If I Wasn’t a Vet… The Career That Almost Was

While Dr. Pedranghelu is now living her dream of healing animals, there was a time when she imagined a completely different career path—one that involved courtrooms instead of clinics.

"Before vet school, I actually earned my Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice," she says. "I grew up inspired by my dad’s work in law enforcement, and for a while, I thought I’d follow in his footsteps and become a lawyer."

Her fascination with law and justice fueled her studies, and she could picture herself navigating high-profile cases, advocating for justice, and making compelling arguments in the courtroom. But something was missing.

"I loved the intellectual challenge of law, but my heart wasn’t in it the way it was with animals," she admits.

And just when you think the story couldn’t take a bigger turn, she reveals another unexpected passion—acting.

"I took a few acting classes in college, and I really enjoyed performing," she laughs. "For a second, I thought, ‘Maybe I could make this work!’ But in the end, nothing felt as right as veterinary medicine."

Now, she’s found a way to blend her love for storytelling and veterinary medicine through media appearances, educational outreach, and client communication.

The Book That Sparked a Passion for Aquatic Medicine

Every vet has that one book that shaped their journey, and for Dr. Pedranghelu, it was Dolphin Doctor by Sam Ridgway.

"This book completely changed the way I saw veterinary medicine," she recalls. "It’s all about the groundbreaking world of aquatic animal care and the deep bond between a veterinarian and a dolphin. I remember reading it in vet school and thinking, ‘This is exactly what I want to do.’"

It was more than just a book—it was an eye-opening look at the possibilities within veterinary medicine. The idea that she could work with marine animals, explore new frontiers in veterinary care, and push the boundaries of what was possible excited her.

"That book is a big part of why I pursued zoo and aquatic medicine," she says. "And even now, as a holistic vet, the lessons from it stay with me. The best medicine is about connection, innovation, and thinking outside the box."

How She Unwinds After a Chaotic Day

Veterinary medicine is one of the most rewarding careers, but it also comes with high stress, long hours, and emotional challenges. Over time, Dr. Pedranghelu has learned that self-care isn’t optional—it’s essential.

"When you spend your days caring for animals and helping clients through difficult situations, you have to have a way to recharge," she explains.

Her secret? A mix of physical activity, mindfulness, and quality time with her pets.

"I love going on grounding walks, lifting weights, or paddleboarding. Exercise helps me clear my head and reset," she says. "And at the end of the day, spending time with my five cats is the perfect way to relax."

Her emphasis on balance extends to her practice, where she encourages pet parents to think about wellness in a holistic way—not just for their animals, but for themselves too.

The Change She Wants to See in the World

For Dr. Pedranghelu, holistic medicine isn’t just about natural remedies—it’s about a bigger shift in how we treat all living beings.

"If there’s one thing I wish we could see more of in the world, it’s compassion," she says. "Whether it’s in veterinary care, how we treat each other, or how we take care of our planet—compassion changes everything."

She believes that true healing goes beyond medicine. It’s about understanding, patience, and kindness.

"Veterinary medicine isn’t just about treating animals. It’s about building relationships, educating pet parents, and making choices that prioritize long-term health," she explains.

Next up?

With such a diverse and exciting career, what’s next for Dr. Pedranghelu?

"I’ve had experiences I never imagined possible, and I know there’s still so much more to learn," she says. "Five years from now, I want to be at the forefront of holistic veterinary medicine, helping more pet parents understand their options, growing my practice, and continuing to challenge the norms of traditional care."

And if there’s one thing she’s sure of, it’s that the adventure is just beginning.

"I promise to keep learning, keep growing, and keep doing what I love—helping animals live their best lives."

Dr. Pedranghelu is proof that veterinary medicine is constantly evolving, and the best practitioners are those who aren’t afraid to think outside the box. Through holistic medicine, client education, and a deep passion for healing, she’s redefining what it means to care for animals.

And with her journey just getting started, one thing is certain—she’s a vet to watch.
