Twinkle’s Bright Future: How Dilmeet Kaur is Lighting Up Veterinary Medicine

When you meet Dilmeet “Twinkle” Kaur, a first-year veterinary student at Purdue University, get ready for a whirlwind of passion, ambition, and a heart full of dreams. Ask her what excites her about veterinary medicine, and you’ll get an inspiring list that spans from small animal medicine to wildlife conservation, from emergency care to international outreach, and everything in between.

“I haven’t narrowed it down yet,” Twinkle laughs. “But why choose just one path when there are so many ways to make a difference?”

Her journey to vet school has been anything but ordinary, and she’s just getting started. Between her love for exotics, her commitment to One Health, and her passion for fighting global health issues, Twinkle is determined to light up the world of veterinary medicine, one step at a time.

From Tennis Courts to Clinics: The Making of a Future Vet

Twinkle’s story doesn’t start in a veterinary clinic. In fact, her first job was as a tennis instructor for kids ages 5-11. At just 15 years old, she spent every summer morning at the crack of dawn, teaching forehands, backhands, and life lessons.

“That job taught me patience, leadership, and how to communicate,” Twinkle recalls. “Those skills are still invaluable today.”

But while she honed her teaching skills on the tennis court, her heart was set on wildlife and conservation. Early on, she faced the harsh reality of how competitive the field of veterinary medicine could be. Determined not to let that discourage her, she initially focused on small animal medicine. However, a life-changing trip to Costa Rica and Peru altered the course of her journey.

“Seeing malnourished street animals and endangered species up close ignited something in me,” she says. “I realized that wildlife medicine was my true calling—no matter how competitive it may be.”

Three Qualities That Define Her

Twinkle’s path to veterinary school is marked by her relentless work ethic, determination, and infectious enthusiasm. These three qualities are at the core of everything she does:

Work Ethic – Whether she’s diving into swine reproduction research or volunteering in exotic animal clinics, Twinkle throws herself into every opportunity.
Determination – “I never gave up, even when balancing family struggles and academics. If anything, those challenges pushed me harder.”
Enthusiasm – “Veterinary medicine never feels like ‘work.’ I love what I do, and it keeps me going.”

Advice to Her Younger Self

Twinkle has a message for the version of herself who was once overwhelmed by the pressures of veterinary school: “Stop being so hard on yourself.”

She remembers crying over a C in organic chemistry, convinced that one grade would ruin her chances at getting into vet school. Now? She laughs at that fear. “One grade doesn’t define you. Struggling is okay. What matters is how you keep going.”

The Change She Wants to See

As she looks ahead, Twinkle is passionate about bringing more empathy, diversity, and conservation efforts to the field of veterinary medicine—and beyond:

More Empathy – “In vet med and the world, we need to listen more and react less. Empathy is the key to creating meaningful change.”
More Diversity – Growing up in a predominantly white community, Twinkle often felt like an outsider. Now, she’s determined to be the mentor for others that she never had.
Stronger Conservation – “Wildlife, people, and the environment are interconnected. We need solutions that consider all three.”

Her Mission? Simple but Powerful

Twinkle’s mission is clear:

  • Provide free veterinary care to underprivileged communities.

  • Travel the world as a wildlife vet, working to protect endangered species.

  • Bridge the gap between animal, human, and environmental health.

“I want to leave the world better than I found it,” she says. “And I’m just getting started.”

What’s Next?

With her involvement in exotics clubs, One Health initiatives, and shelter medicine already filling her schedule, Twinkle’s future is as bright as her nickname suggests.

One thing’s for sure: wherever she goes, she will make waves in the field—and light the way for others to follow.
