Isla Farrow: Breaking Barriers and Uplifting Future Generations in Veterinary Medicine

Meet Isla Farrow, a rising star in the veterinary world who is determined to make a lasting impact both in her field and the communities she serves. As a DVM candidate at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, DEI Co-Chair, SAVMA DEI & Wellness Chair, and SNABV President, Isla’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is at the heart of her veterinary journey.

Clearing Her Head After a Stressful Day

Like many veterinary students, Isla’s days can be intense and overwhelming. But she’s found ways to decompress and clear her mind. “After a long day, I like to clear my head by doing things that bring me comfort and joy,” she shares. One of her favorite ways to unwind is by taking peaceful nature walks, soaking in the fresh air and scenery. Sometimes, a simple treat—like grabbing ice cream—lifts her spirits. But it’s not just about the quiet moments; Isla also turns to friends for support, whether it’s to vent, laugh, or just catch up. “Having those conversations always makes me feel better,” she says. When she needs full rest, nothing beats a refreshing nap to recharge her energy and reset her mind.

Advice for Her Younger Self

Reflecting on her journey, Isla would offer some sage advice to her younger self: "Trust the process and have faith that everything works out the way it’s supposed to when the time is right." She recognizes the importance of resilience and self-belief, reminding herself that even when things seem uncertain, each challenge is shaping her into a stronger, more capable person. "I would tell her to be patient, stay determined, and trust that she is exactly where she needs to be," Isla reflects. With the wisdom she’s gained, she’s confident that one day, she’ll become a mentor, guiding others just as she was guided along the way.

A Heroic Role Model: Her Dad

Growing up, Isla’s hero was her dad. Raised in Engelhard, North Carolina, her father’s journey from a small rural town to becoming a respected leader in education is nothing short of inspiring. Despite facing poverty and challenges, he pursued higher education and became the first in his family to earn a doctorate. “My dad’s story taught me about hard work, perseverance, and the importance of never giving up,” Isla says. “He showed me that no matter your starting point, you can achieve greatness.” His dedication to serving at-risk students and striving for excellence fuels Isla’s own aspirations to make a difference in the lives of others.

A Life-Changing Adventure: Costa Rica

One pivotal moment that changed Isla’s life and solidified her commitment to veterinary medicine was her adventure in Costa Rica. In the summer of 2019, she participated in a wildlife conservation externship with Wild Sun Rescue Center. There, Isla helped with the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of wildlife, including the reintroduction of the Scarlet Macaw. "This experience rekindled my belief in myself and reaffirmed that veterinary medicine was the right choice for me," Isla reflects. Working with a variety of wildlife species, including howler monkeys and raptors, helped her see her limitless potential and gave her the courage to continue on her path, despite doubts.

Why Finding Purpose is Important

For Isla, having a sense of purpose is crucial. "Purpose gives direction, motivation, and fulfillment. It connects your actions to a greater goal, helping you stay resilient through challenges,” she explains. With her passion for veterinary medicine and DEI initiatives, Isla is driven by the opportunity to create a meaningful impact, not only in her career but also in the lives of others. "Purpose leads to happiness, self-worth, and the ability to make a difference," she says. For Isla, her purpose is about breaking barriers, uplifting underserved communities, and providing mentorship to those who need it most.

The Biggest Issue Facing Veterinary Medicine Today

As Isla looks to the future, she sees the lack of diversity as a significant issue within the veterinary field. “Veterinary medicine has historically been one of the least diverse healthcare professions, and it’s something that needs to change,” Isla says. She believes that by increasing access to veterinary education, providing scholarships, and supporting mentorship, the field can become more inclusive, ultimately leading to better care for animals and stronger bonds with the communities veterinarians serve. "Diversity isn’t just about representation; it’s about understanding the needs of all pet owners and providing equitable care,” she emphasizes.

Isla’s Mission and Future Goals

Isla’s mission is clear: to create a lasting impact by uplifting others and breaking barriers. “I’m determined to give back to underserved communities and provide mentorship to those who feel overlooked or marginalized,” she says. Looking ahead, Isla envisions herself in five years, well on her way to completing her anesthesia residency in veterinary medicine, ready to embark on her dream career. Whether working with household pets, exotic animals, or marine life, Isla is committed to improving the lives of animals through compassionate care.

Isla's journey is a testament to perseverance, self-belief, and the power of mentorship. By embracing her purpose and using her platform to advocate for diversity, she’s not only shaping her own future but also paving the way for others to follow in her footsteps. Her passion for veterinary medicine and dedication to making a difference is sure to leave a legacy for years to come.
