Meet the 27-Year-Old Vet Revolutionizing Cat Care—Her Story Will Inspire You!

At just 27 years old, Dr. Brittney Kilgore has already accomplished what many veterinarians dream of—a new graduate from St. George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine and now the proud owner of her very own cat-focused veterinary clinic. Recognized as Vet Candy’s Rising Star, Dr. Kilgore is not only a trailblazer in feline medicine but also an advocate for creating a more inclusive, stress-free environment for both cats and their owners.

From Atlanta to the Caribbean and Back: Dr. Kilgore’s Journey

Born and raised in Atlanta, GA, Dr. Kilgore's path to becoming a veterinary practice owner started with a love of animals early on. After earning her degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Georgia, she took a bold step and moved to the Caribbean island of Grenada to attend St. George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine. It was there that her passion for feline medicine began to flourish. During her clinical rotations, she completed an externship with Lifeline’s Community Animal Center, where she discovered her love for working with cats. The experience was so meaningful that she chose to continue her career at Lifeline after graduation.

A Lifelong Love of Cats

When asked why she loves cats so much, Dr. Kilgore has a simple but heartfelt response: "It’s sort of a hard question—I just do!" Growing up with dogs, her family wasn’t big on cats, but her love for felines began at age 7 when she got her first kitten. That bond deepened as she got older and discovered the world of cat-exclusive clinics. “I love cats because they can be very social and have unique personalities, but they also like their independence. Dogs follow you around and can be quite needy. I like cats with 'dog-like' tendencies but still appreciate their agility, wit, and cleanliness,” she says.

Creating the Ultimate Cat Experience

Dr. Kilgore's new clinic is more than just a place for treatment—it's a sanctuary for cats and their owners. “We are a Cat-Friendly practice through the AAFP, but I’ve taken additional steps,” she explains. From wooden, low-to-the-ground exam tables to Chamomile and Feliway diffusers, her clinic is designed with feline comfort in mind. Shy cats are given hiding beds, and enrichment, including toys and catnip, is provided to help ease their anxiety. One of her most exciting features is a dedicated playroom for boarders, where cats can exercise in a safe, private space away from other animals. And in the future? A catio is in the works to let cats enjoy fresh air in a secure, enriching environment.

Finding the Purrrfect Veterinarian

Dr. Kilgore is passionate about educating cat owners on what to look for in a veterinarian. “Look for a clinic with at least one veterinarian who has a Cat-Friendly certification or who is known to have an interest in cats,” she advises. "These practices often have protocols that reduce stress and make cats feel more at ease."

A Passion for Teaching and Inclusivity

Beyond her work in feline medicine, Dr. Kilgore is also passionate about teaching and mentoring the next generation of veterinarians. She is committed to creating an inclusive environment for minorities and the LGBTQ+ community within the veterinary field. In her free time, she enjoys staying active with CrossFit, cooking, and traveling with her partner. Dr. Kilgore’s holistic approach extends to her animal patients as well, with a special interest in alternative therapies, diet management, and behavioral consultations.

With her innovative approach to feline care and her dedication to making veterinary clinics more welcoming for cats and their owners, Dr. Brittney Kilgore is a true rising star, already shaping the future of veterinary medicine.
