How Three Trailblazing Women Built New Mexico’s Lifeline for Pets – Inside the 24/7 Emergency Hospital Shaping the Future of Vet Care

By 2024, the veterinary landscape in New Mexico had become dire. The combined impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and a wave of consolidation left the entire state with just one 24/7 emergency veterinary clinic. Recognizing the urgent need for more accessible emergency care, three seasoned veterinarians—Dr. Julia Donnelly, DVM, cVMA, Dr. Nicole Chamney, DOM, DVM, MBA, and Dr. Sonja Sims, DVM, cVMA—joined forces to establish the Mosaic Animal Emergency & Specialty Hospital in Santa Fe.

These inspiring women set out to make a difference, acquiring a 16,000-square-foot building at 2001 Vivigen Way. They transformed this space into a state-of-the-art, 24/7 emergency and specialty hospital, fully equipped to handle any pet emergency. The facility boasts an intensive care unit (ICU), isolation wards, advanced diagnostic imaging, an in-house lab and pharmacy, and the capacity for overnight and multi-day hospitalization. Notably, the hospital also features a patient kitchen to cater to pets with special dietary needs, and unique, calming CASCO enclosures to provide a more soothing environment than traditional metal kennels.

"Our team of meticulously trained emergency veterinarians, veterinary technicians, assistants, and client experience representatives are on standby around the clock to provide compassionate care for ill or injured pets," said Dr. Julia Donnelly. "Emergency care is available without an appointment, ensuring pets get the immediate attention they need."

The Mosaic team didn’t just create a hospital—they built a much-needed sanctuary for pets in crisis. Dr. Donnelly emphasized their dedication to providing a trusted resource for the local veterinary community and fostering an environment where team members feel valued. “Alongside my partners, Dr. Chamney and Dr. Sims, it has been a privilege to create Mosaic Animal, and we look forward to it being an integral part of our community for years to come,” she added.
