Merck Animal Health's Groundbreaking Initiative Boosts Minority-Owned Cattle Farms – Here’s How It’s Transforming the Industry

Merck Animal Health, known as MSD Animal Health outside the United States and Canada, has launched an innovative collaboration with the Winston County Self Help Cooperative (WCSHC) in East Central Mississippi. This partnership aims to enhance the economic and environmental viability of minority-owned cattle herds through the Beef Cattle Herd Health Initiative, a comprehensive two-year program.

The Beef Cattle Herd Health Initiative is designed to provide vital livestock herd health information, education, and training to cattle ranchers operating small farms. Through classroom educational events, producer farm tours, on-farm workshops, and demonstrations, the initiative focuses on improving veterinary care, grazing plans, animal welfare and performance, economic viability, and conservation and sustainability outcomes on the farms.

“We’re excited about the opportunity that the Beef Cattle Herd Health Initiative presents as it encapsulates Merck Animal Health’s commitment to providing support, information, and education to those who improve the lives of animals,” said John Hutcheson, Ph.D., director of beef technical services at Merck Animal Health. “We continue to engage with ranchers to improve care for their animals, improve economic outcomes for minority ranchers in the industry, and create more environmentally sustainable management practices on their farms.”

Program Details and Support

Ten pilot ranchers were selected to participate in the initiative, receiving comprehensive support that includes:

  • Veterinary Guidance: A dedicated livestock veterinarian to lead educational efforts and prescribe necessary medications.

  • Grazing Expertise: A grazing technician to provide hands-on assistance in forage management, aimed at improving cattle weight gain and farm sustainability.

  • Ranch Assistance: Experienced local ranch hands to aid in livestock handling.

Merck Animal Health's support for the initiative totals approximately $145,000, encompassing veterinary and animal handling expertise, training sessions, and a range of animal health products. These include ear tags for identification, vaccines, implants, treatments for internal and external parasites, and insecticide ear tags. Additionally, supplies such as fecal sample kits and vaccine coolers are provided.

Positive Impact and Community Engagement

The initiative has already shown promising results. “The initial feedback from ranchers has been very positive,” said Dr. Hutcheson. “We’ve held our first on-farm demonstrations and are looking forward to the second round of visits with the ranchers and the Winston County Self Help Cooperative personnel to monitor progress. One of the greatest benefits of this initiative is to see these producers work together to strengthen each other and their care for animals and their operations. It’s wonderful to be part of this community working together to improve animal health, economic outcomes, and environmental impact.”

Through this initiative, Merck Animal Health aims to foster a collaborative environment where ranchers can share knowledge and resources, ultimately leading to stronger, more resilient farming operations. The program’s focus on sustainability ensures that these improvements will benefit not only the current generation of farmers but also future generations.

Looking Forward

The Beef Cattle Herd Health Initiative represents a significant step forward in supporting minority-owned cattle farms. By providing the necessary tools, education, and hands-on support, Merck Animal Health and the Winston County Self Help Cooperative are empowering farmers to enhance their operations and contribute to a more sustainable and economically viable agricultural sector.

As the initiative progresses, Merck Animal Health remains committed to its mission of improving animal health and welfare while supporting the economic stability and growth of the agricultural community. This groundbreaking project is set to make a lasting impact on the lives of minority ranchers and the broader farming industry.
