From Peru to Florida: How One Vet Tech Student is Conquering the Veterinary World!

Rising Star: Hella Whittle's Journey from Peru to Pursuing Veterinary Medicine in the USA

At just 22 years old, Hella Whittle has already embarked on an incredible journey, one that took her from the vibrant streets of Peru to the sunny shores of Florida. Her story is one of unwavering determination, boundless passion, and the pursuit of dreams that span continents.

Hella's fascination with medicine began in her childhood. Growing up in Peru, she always wanted to be a doctor. Her parents, recognizing her passion, supported her every step of the way. Their encouragement became the foundation upon which she built her aspirations. However, it wasn't until she met Dulce, her beloved dog, that her path crystalized into a commitment to veterinary medicine.

After high school, Hella enrolled in veterinary school in Peru in 2019, diving headfirst into her studies. But by 2020, she decided to seek greater opportunities and moved to Florida. This bold move was not without its challenges. She had to learn English and start anew in a different educational system. Despite having completed three years of veterinary school in Peru, her credits were not transferable. Undeterred, Hella enrolled at St. Petersburg College to become a veterinary technician.

Now, Hella is in the final year of her vet tech program, with plans to apply to veterinary schools at either the University of Florida or the University of Tennessee. She currently works as a vet assistant in a general practice and will soon start an emergency role at VEG. These experiences are crucial steps towards her ultimate goal of becoming a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM).

The support of her husband has been invaluable on this journey. "He helps me with everything I need to fulfill my dreams and always cheers me up," Hella says, reflecting on his unwavering encouragement. Her dogs, especially Dulce, continue to inspire her every day.

The decision to move from Peru to the USA, leaving behind two years of veterinary studies, was the hardest Hella has ever made. Yet, it also exemplifies her perseverance and dedication. Her career advice to others is to be persistent, a quality that has undoubtedly served her well. "Every day is a new day to learn something else, especially in medicine. You never stop learning."

Balancing her studies with work, Hella maintains a busy schedule but understands the importance of self-care. She finds solace in reading and exercising, and always keeps Sundays free to spend time with her husband and dogs.

Looking ahead, Hella envisions herself as a DVM or a veterinary student in five years, with experience in emergency medicine. She also dreams of starting a family and buying a home. Her mission in life is clear: to take care of animals and educate pet owners. She is passionate about mental wellness in the veterinary field and is an active member of the Not One More Vet (NOMV) team, which supports colleagues facing difficult times.

Hella's story is not just about personal success; it's about inspiring others to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles. "Sometimes it is hard being in a new country by yourself, but with time you start creating your new story and your new life," she says, encouraging others to embrace new adventures and not give up.

Her journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, the importance of support systems, and the belief that one can achieve anything with dedication and hard work. Hella Whittle is indeed a rising star in the veterinary field, and her story is sure to inspire many more to follow their dreams.
