UC Davis Shatters Global Rankings: A Beacon of Excellence in Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences

The University of California, Davis has once again been recognized for its outstanding global leadership in veterinary science and agriculture and forestry, maintaining its high standing in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024, which were released today (April 10).

Regarded as a major international authority on educational standards, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has ranked UC Davis second in the world for both veterinary science and agriculture and forestry. The university has achieved remarkable consistency in these rankings, having secured the top position in veterinary science five times since it was first included in 2015 and holding the number one spot in agriculture and forestry during the initial ranking years, before settling into the second position consistently since 2016.

Beyond these fields, UC Davis also boasts impressive global rankings in the broader category of life sciences and medicine, where it stands 35th worldwide. The university demonstrates its academic versatility with top-50 rankings in five additional subjects including environmental sciences, geophysics, biological sciences, geology, and development studies.

Chancellor Gary S. May highlighted the significance of these rankings, stating, "These rankings underscore that UC Davis is the global leader in veterinary science and agriculture. They also show that the campus provides a world-class education across academic disciplines, while conducting impactful research that advances understanding and solutions to the planet’s most pressing challenges."

The QS rankings are meticulously calculated based on several critical factors such as academic reputation, employer reputation, research impact and citations, and the diversity of the university’s international research network.

This year, QS analyzed academic programs in 55 subjects across 4,982 institutions, ranking 1,559 universities globally. Notably, the rankings did not provide national standings this year.

The School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis is currently celebrating its 75th anniversary and is home to over 700 students enrolled in various professional and graduate degree programs, including the nation's largest veterinarian house officer program with more than 40 specialties. The school's hospital annually treats over 50,000 patients and receives more than $64 million in research funding, impacting animal, human, and planetary health.

Meanwhile, the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences hosts over 7,600 undergraduates and 1,030 graduate students across numerous disciplines, with its researchers receiving more than $165 million in funding annually. UC Davis remains one of the most published and cited research institutions in the U.S. across multiple fields including agricultural sciences, animal science, and food nutrition.

As UC Davis continues to be recognized for its transformative impact on students' lives and significant contributions to research and academia, the university remains committed to upholding the values that align with its mission—serving the public good through inclusiveness, equity, and social mobility.
