Chewy's CEO, Sumit Singh, Discusses the Future of Veterinary Clinics and Corporate Strategy on CNBC Interview

In a recent interview, Sumit Singh, an executive at Chewy, addressed key challenges and innovations shaping the future of veterinary care in the United States. Singh was asked about whether there are enough veterinarians in the workforce to meet the growing demands of the industry.

"That's a great question," Singh replied, highlighting a trend that has been significant for the past several years and is expected to pose challenges for the foreseeable future. "Vet capacity is currently outrunning demand," he noted, emphasizing the need for high-quality service providers that can offer solutions by leveraging technology.

Chewy aims to enhance the veterinary work environment by focusing on aspects that appeal to modern veterinarians, such as flexible scheduling and work-life balance, while also reducing operational costs. Singh pointed out that veterinarians spend a considerable amount of time on back-end operations, which can be streamlined significantly. "We are designing our clinics to be experience-forward for both customers and vets," he stated, asserting that Chewy's proprietary technology is set to improve service quality and efficiency.

When asked about how these developments could influence Chewy's financial performance, particularly given that the company's stock has been under pressure, Singh was optimistic. He described animal health as "the next frontier" for Chewy, detailing how the company has methodically expanded into a comprehensive ecosystem over the last five years. Starting with veterinarian diets and prescription medications, Chewy has added insurance for pet owners and support services for veterinarians.

"We've built this integrated offering that reduces inefficiencies significantly," Singh explained. "For instance, a customer can be checked in digitally, triaged before even entering the clinic, and enjoy a seamless payment experience. All these steps are designed to keep customers within the Chewy ecosystem, encompassing food, medicine, and care."

Reflecting on the surge in pet adoption during the COVID-19 pandemic, Singh corrected some common misconceptions. "Not every household in America acquired a pet during the pandemic," he clarified. While demand was high, the actual capacity for new pets—whether from shelters or breeders—did not increase correspondingly. He observed that the pandemic had accelerated the shift from retail to online environments, a trend that he believes will continue to shape the industry.

Overall, Singh's vision for Chewy is to create a more integrated and efficient approach to pet care, positioning the company at the forefront of the industry's evolution while enhancing both the customer and veterinarian experience.
