Big Changes at Knollwood Hospital for Pets: Meet the New Hometown Veterinary Partners Schaumburg

For over 40 years, Knollwood Hospital for Pets has been a cornerstone of veterinary care in Schaumburg, offering both traditional and integrative therapies under the leadership of Dr. Deborah Mitchell. Now, this beloved practice is beginning a new chapter as it rebrands to Hometown Veterinary Partners Schaumburg, bringing fresh energy while maintaining the continuity of care the community has relied on for decades.

Dr. Mitchell, who has dedicated her life to animal care, recently made the decision to sell her practice and transition into semi-retirement. Reflecting on her career, Dr. Mitchell shared, “It has been an absolute joy, honor, and privilege to serve as your veterinarian for the past 41 years. My passion for caring for animals is just as strong today as it was when I was a 6-year-old in a crumpled Sunday dress, getting scolded by my mom for playing with strange dogs and cats. ‘But Mama,’ I said, ‘they’re NOT strangers – they’re my friends!’ I have been fortunate to share this passion with you and your pets.”

Passing the Baton to Dr. Mak and Hometown Veterinary Partners

Dr. Mitchell knew she wanted to leave her practice in the hands of a like-minded, woman-owned organization committed to empowering veterinarians and providing top-notch pet care. She found that fit with Hometown Veterinary Partners, a group that offers veterinary professionals a range of career options, including pathways to partnership. Founder and President Keri Kamba has created a structure that not only supports veterinarians in building the careers they envision but also helps those who wish to retire and transition their practices.

The new chapter for Knollwood comes with the introduction of Dr. Cindy Mak (Dr. Mak), a Partner Doctor with Hometown Veterinary Partners, as the new face of the practice. Raised in Carol Stream, Dr. Mak has been a well-respected veterinarian in both the Chicago area and Southern Wisconsin. “I knew I wanted to become a veterinarian at five years old when my mother gave me an encyclopedia about animals. I read it every night as a bedtime story,” she shared.

Exciting Changes on the Horizon

With the rebranding comes a few positive changes. The hospital is expanding its hours to include Fridays and Saturdays, and it will undergo a remodeling set to culminate in an Open House for clients in 2025. “One change I’m really excited about is expanding our treatment area to better meet the needs of our clients and their pets,” said Dr. Mak.

Dr. Mak also reassured current and future clients, “We aim to enhance what you’ve come to love while continuing to serve you with compassion, kindness, dedication, and a wealth of knowledge. Thank you for welcoming us to the community and allowing us the opportunity to care for your pets!”
