Join the Adventure! Sail, Heal, and Help Animals with Dr. Sheddy’s Wellness Retreats on the High Seas!

Dr. Sheridan Lathe, fondly known as “Dr. Sheddy,” has crafted a remarkable life blending her love for veterinary medicine, travel, and now well-being adventures. Born and raised in Queensland, Australia, she graduated from James Cook University, embarking on a veterinary career that took her to some unexpected places. From diagnosing koalas with STDs to mending turtle shells, Dr. Sheddy honed her skills in rural Queensland and as a wildlife veterinarian in South Australia.

However, her life truly transformed when she landed her dream job in China, rescuing Asiatic Black Bears from the bear bile trade. The experience deepened her commitment to helping animals in need, but another turning point came with her love for sailing. After a marriage that didn’t last, her passion for life on the sea remained strong.

The Chuffed Adventure Begins

In 2017, Dr. Sheddy purchased Chuffed, a 37-foot aluminum-hull sailboat, and transformed her love of sailing into a meaningful mission. Through her non-profit, Vet Tails, she now sails around the world, providing free veterinary care to remote communities that often lack basic animal health resources. Combining veterinary work with the joy of travel and adventure, she offers aid where it's needed most, while promoting awareness and education about animal care.

Sailing Meets Well-Being

More recently, Dr. Sheddy has expanded her talents, now integrating well-being adventures into her unique lifestyle. In addition to offering veterinary care, she’s focused on promoting physical and mental wellness through activities like yoga, meditation, and, of course, surfing. Whether it’s riding the waves or finding peace in a remote anchorage, Dr. Sheddy emphasizes the importance of self-care, particularly for those working in demanding professions like veterinary medicine. Her sailing journey has allowed her to connect with nature and recharge while helping others do the same.

A Typical Day at Sea

Life aboard Chuffed is anything but ordinary. Dr. Sheddy's days start with the sunrise, a hot cup of tea, and often a swim or surf before she dives into the day's work. Mornings are spent onshore, treating animals for free or for a minimal fee that reflects the economic realities of the communities she serves. Veterinary care is just part of her mission; educating locals about animal welfare is key to ensuring long-term improvements.

Afternoons are often filled with boat maintenance and resupplying for her next journey. Sailing life means mastering new skills—whether it’s fixing an engine or navigating stormy seas with a week’s worth of groceries in a small dinghy. In the evenings, if the weather is calm, Dr. Sheddy and her partner enjoy simple meals, often fish caught fresh from the sea, while winding down with music, yoga, or a good book.

Navigating the Challenges

Dr. Sheddy acknowledges that life on a boat, combined with the emotional toll of witnessing poor animal welfare, can be mentally and physically exhausting. To prevent burnout—a major issue in the veterinary profession—she prioritizes balance by incorporating relaxing and fulfilling activities into her routine. Surfing, painting, and even quiet moments of reflection help her stay grounded and energized for the work ahead.

The Future: Well-Being and Veterinary Adventures

Looking ahead, Dr. Sheddy envisions combining her passions for animal care and well-being into larger projects. Whether it's owning a bigger boat to bring veterinary volunteers on “working vacations” or establishing a charity clinic, she remains committed to her mission of helping animals and promoting wellness, both in the communities she visits and within the veterinary profession itself.
