In a remarkable act of generosity, PetSmart Charities has announced a $1.1 million grant to the Virginia Beach Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (VBSPCA), marking a significant step toward making veterinary care more accessible to families facing financial hardships.

Across the United States, an estimated fifty million pets are grappling with inadequate access to essential veterinary services, including spay/neuter procedures, vaccinations, and critical medical and preventative care. Recognizing this urgent need, PetSmart Charities has committed to an ambitious $100 million donation over the next five years, dedicated to enhancing medical care access for pets in need. A portion of this substantial commitment will bolster the efforts of qualifying nonprofits to expand low-cost veterinary services through operational and infrastructural support.

The generous grant allocated to the VBSPCA will be instrumental in expanding their clinic, allowing for increased capacity, additional staffing, and crucial equipment upgrades. This expansion is not just about size; it's about substantially broadening access to urgent care services, managing long-term health conditions, and providing routine wellness and illness visits at a lower cost.

Derby Brackett, CEO of the Virginia Beach SPCA, highlighted the growing crisis where pet parents in the Hampton Roads area are increasingly unable to afford veterinary care, leading to the heartbreaking decision of surrendering their beloved pets to shelters. "The expansion of the VBSPCA Clinic will ensure that pets receive the medical attention they need while remaining in the loving homes of their families," Brackett stated.
