Dr. Rizal Lopez Achieves Milestone with 25,000th Spay Surgery

Dr. Rizal Lopez, a seasoned veterinarian at SPCA Tampa Bay, has reached a remarkable milestone, completing his 25,000th spay and neuter surgery. The lucky patient was Thumbelina, a cat who unknowingly became a part of this significant achievement.

This landmark surgery places Dr. Lopez in a unique position, having performed more surgeries than the seating capacity of the Amalie Arena during a Tampa Bay Lightning game. Since joining SPCA Tampa Bay in 2011, Dr. Lopez has been a vital member of the veterinary community, holding memberships in the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Pinellas County Veterinary Medical Association, among others.

Before his tenure with SPCA Tampa Bay, Dr. Lopez spent 12 years in private practice, where he completed 1,000 of these surgeries. The significance of his work extends far beyond the operating table. Spaying and neutering pets not only increase their life expectancy and decrease their risk for certain cancers, but it also plays a critical role in controlling pet populations, thereby reducing the number of homeless animals in shelters.

Martha Boden, CEO of SPCA Tampa Bay, praises Dr. Lopez’s commitment: "His dedication has helped thousands of cats and dogs live longer, healthier lives."
