Defying Odds: How Vet Student and Mom, Ashley Oppermann, Merges Motherhood with Veterinary Medicine

In Madison, Wisconsin, Ashley Oppermann, a third-year veterinary student at UW-Madison, begins her day much like any other student. But Ashley is not just any student – she is a mother, a wife, and a dreamer who's breaking barriers and redefining what it means to be a veterinary student in today's demanding world.

Ashley's journey to vet school was unconventional. A native of Wisconsin, she graduated with a degree in Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. After working at a small animal practice in Oconomowoc, WI, Ashley made the bold decision to pursue veterinary medicine – a dream that came with its set of challenges as a mother to a young daughter.

Balancing the rigorous demands of veterinary school and motherhood, Ashley has become a symbol of perseverance and resilience. "The most agonizing career decision I ever made was choosing to apply to veterinary school while also being a mother," she reflects. But it was her unwavering commitment to her family and her career that propelled her forward.

Ashley's days are a blend of attending classes, clinical rotations, and returning home to her biggest supporter – her four-year-old daughter. "The best way I clear my head is to come home, hug my daughter and see her adorable smile," Ashley shares, emphasizing the importance of family time amidst her hectic schedule.

In addition to her studies, Ashley is heavily involved in the veterinary community. She has served as the BCP Coordinator for the local VBMA Chapter, is the Vice President of UW Madison SAVMA, and holds a position on the WVMA Executive Board as the Student Representative. Her goal? To become a board-certified Anesthesiologist upon completing her DVM.

Despite her busy life, Ashley finds time for herself and her interests. She enjoys hiking with her family and their two dogs, Karl and Kevin, traveling, reading, enjoying coffee, and horseback riding – activities that keep her grounded and connected to the world beyond veterinary medicine.

Ashley's advice for her younger self and others in similar situations is profound: "Everything happens for a reason. Life is an imperfect experience but such a wonderful experience." This mindset has helped her navigate the challenges of vet school while being a nurturing mother and supportive wife.

Looking to the future, Ashley envisions herself as a role model not just for her daughter but for anyone who dares to dream big

, regardless of their circumstances. In five years, she sees herself continuing to grow, both personally and professionally, while maintaining the tenacity, perseverance, and level-headedness that have defined her journey so far.

Her experience as a veterinary student and a mother has not only shaped her career but also her perspective on life. "The adventure that most changed my life was undoubtedly motherhood," Ashley acknowledges. It's this adventure that has taught her the essence of selflessness and the profound joy that comes from the little things in life.

Ashley's mission extends beyond her immediate family to the broader veterinary community. She aims to be a positive influence in the field, advocating for compassion and understanding in a profession often marred by emotional challenges like compassion fatigue. "Addressing this issue requires awareness, support, and prioritizing mental health within the veterinary community," she emphasizes.

In a field that demands so much of its professionals, Ashley Oppermann stands out as a beacon of hope and inspiration. Her story is a testament to the power of determination, the importance of balance, and the unyielding strength of a mother's love. As she continues her journey through veterinary school and into the professional world, Ashley's influence and story will undoubtedly continue to inspire and encourage others to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles.
