Veterinary Mental Health Revolution: Groundbreaking Study Shows Unprecedented Positive Trends Post-Pandemic!

Discover the latest advancements in the veterinary field's approach to mental health as revealed in a comprehensive study conducted with the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). This pivotal research, the first of its kind since the global pandemic, delves deep into the wellbeing and mental health of U.S. veterinarians and their teams.

Unveiling a series of positive trends, the study shows an increasing focus on mental health in veterinary practices. With nearly five times

more responses from veterinary technicians and office managers than previous surveys, this study's expanded scope offers a broader understanding of the challenges and successes in veterinary mental health.

Increase in Mental Health Resources for Professionals
Almost three-quarters of veterinary professionals express personal satisfaction with their career, but there are still factors they are concerned about, including high exhaustion, work-life balance, and shortage of vets, all of which can contribute to a feeling of burnout. Results indicate that more veterinarians who needed mental health support received outpatient treatment and counseling for mental health challenges in 2023. Moreover, there has been a substantial increase in clinics supporting their team's mental health and emotional wellbeing, with results showing that 38% of clinics now offer an employee assistance program (EAP) as opposed to 31% in 2021 and 27% in 2019.

Experience the surprising revelations of high job satisfaction and pride among veterinary teams, balanced against the ongoing challenges of staff shortages and stress. Christine Royal, DVM, of Merck Animal Health, highlights the increasing focus on team culture and mental health as a promising trend.

Explore the complexities and rewards of the veterinary profession, including the critical role of relationships and communication within clinic teams. Merck Animal Health continues to support the mental wellbeing of veterinary professionals through innovative programs like MentorVet, demonstrating a commitment to fostering a supportive industry environment.
