Overcoming Paralysis to Winning Championships: Veterinary College Plays Key Role in Belle's Remarkable Agility Comeback

In a tale highlighting resilience and collaborative veterinary care, Belle, a 4-year-old Australian shepherd, triumphantly returned to dog agility competitions after facing a period of paralysis.

The narrative unfolded last June when owner Mary Harris observed Belle's abnormal walking. Soon after, the typically active dog found it challenging to walk or stand. Harris promptly sought the expertise of her primary veterinarian, Katie Clevenger DVM , at the Blue Ridge Animal Clinic, where Belle was initiated on a pain management regimen.

Despite initial efforts, Belle's condition continued to worsen, leading to a referral to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in Blacksburg for an emergency consultation.

Under the attentive care of Ana Figueiredo, clinical instructor in emergency and critical care medicine, it was determined that Belle was grappling with an acute spinal issue of unknown origin. With some regained strength in her back legs, Figueiredo presented two options to Harris: transferring Belle to the neurology service for an MRI and potential surgery or adopting a more conservative approach involving rest, medication, and continued monitoring.

Despite being prepared for any necessary measures, Harris appreciated Figueiredo's thorough explanation of the considerations for each treatment plan. The commitment to a "spectrum of care," prioritizing a range of diagnostic and treatment options, deeply resonated with Harris.

Belle responded positively to the strict regimen of rest, medication, and an additional rehabilitation plan. Gradually, she regained her strength, marking her triumphant return to the agility ring, albeit with shorter courses and less intense obstacles.

Through collaboration with the veterinary team, Harris and Belle successfully reentered the world of agility just in time for the North American Dog Agility Council's 2023 National Championships in Springfield, Ohio, where over 250 dog and handler teams competed.

“Belle did great,” exclaimed Harris regarding the event. “She’s never been the fastest dog, but she’s absolutely committed. I’m glad we did it.”
