Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace

Everybody has different levels to their identities, allowing them a unique perspective of the world. So when you are immersed in an environment where there are people with different identities from your own, it immediately broadens your perspective. When your work environment includes different layers of diversity, it offers a chance to be judged by your character rather than the stereotypical prejudices common in environments lacking diversity.

The Difference Between Diversity and Inclusion What We Mean by Diversity

Diversity can come in different degrees and reference many layers to a person's identity. These identities offer strong qualities that can improve and develop a healthy workplace environment.

The layers of diversity are broken down into four different sections:

โ˜… Worldview Diversity is your outlook on life, ethical and moral values, political beliefs, Etc.

โ˜… Organizational diversity categorizes your socioeconomic class, employment status, line of work, pay type, Etc.

โ˜… External diversity is your citizenship status, personal interests/hobbies, education, physical appearance, Etc.

โ˜… Internal diversity defines race, ethnicity, cultural background, age, gender identity, mental ability, Etc. What about Inclusion? Inclusion is the frosting on the cake when it comes to benefitting from diverse environments.

You can have as many different people in one space as you want, but diversity loses its power if their opinions and concerns are not addressed equally. It's great for businesses to spend resources on increasing the presence of minorities, but if the same group demographic is still holding all the management spaces, then diversity is just a pretty word on paper.
