Why we are mad about Dr. Israel Swann

He might be a self-described “dog dad” but when it comes to animals, Dr. Israel Swann is no stranger to exotic creatures.

From jellyfish to sharks (and all finned friends in between) this veterinarian is a pro at handling cases of the aquatic, exotic, and companion animal variety. Originally from Southwest Texas, Dr. Israel is a graduate of Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Today, he shares his love of wildlife at Roundhouse Aquarium Teaching Center.

We caught up with Dr. Israeln to get his insightful take on finding one’s passion and staying positive in the rapidly changing field of veterinary medicine.

So, without further ado…introducing the amazing Dr. Israel!

Job vs. Career: What’s the Difference?

“Choose a job you love, and you will never work a day in your life.”

That’s the age-old advice your high school guidance counsellor probably gave. But is it true?

According to Dr. Israel…yes, absolutely.

He shares, “Your purpose in life is your passion. It is what separates a ‘job’ or ‘career’ from truly doing what you love to do everyday. Without purpose and passion in your work, what is the point in doing it other than a paycheck? For me, that’s not enough. Truly loving what I do is everything.”

For veterinarians such as Dr. Israel, this passion is what drives his career goals. A love of animals combined with a fascination surrounding science and medicine (plus lots of hard work, perseverance and being open to changing the plan as needed) has got him to where he is currently: happily spending his days alongside some of the coolest marine creatures in the world.

Don’t Read the Comments! How Dr. Swann Steers Clear of Negativity and Stays Professional Online

Those who watch Disney+ and Nat Geo Wild no doubt have seen Dr. K’s Exotic Animal ER.

But did you catch the episode featuring Dr. Israel?

Filming has taught him a lot. In fact, some of the best career advice he ever received came from shooting on set. That being: don’t read the comments.

Dr. Swann explains, “I have never read a comment, good or bad. I think a lot of vets can use this advice even if you aren’t shooting with a show. For most hospitals, the internet is bombarded with reviews, positive and negative. I don’t read any of them and I honestly have no idea what’s out there! I do the best I can everyday, and that’s all I can do. I don’t let outside influences get into my head.”

In a world that demands we have a social media presence, being able to tune out the negativity and instead focus on striving to be the best doctors we can be matters. Additionally, this is what enables Dr. Swann to connect genuinely with his clients and show as much love and care to his patients as humanly possible.

Social media is great. But keeping it positive and professional is so important.

The Takeaway

Dr. Israel’s final words of wisdom?

“Life is too short not to experience your passions!” he says. “Go for it.”
