SARS-CoV-2 affliction in companion animals in Brazil

Animals living in close contact with people being reported positive for COVID- 19 can acquire SARS-CoV-2 infection. The research was done to investigate the exposure of SARS-COVID 2 and clinical alterations in cats and dogs living in close alliance with humans having positive reports of COVID-19. Rectal and nasopharyngeal swabs of thirty-nine petswere analyzed in a laboratory to detect SARS-COV-2.

Blood specimens were also assessed to interrogate specific antibodies against SARS-COV-2. In this survey, forty percent of cats and thirty-one percent of dogs were detected seropositive against SARS-COV-2. Some dogs were detected positive twice in few days. Antibodies against SARS-COV-2 were inspected in two cats and one dog.

Six pets being diagnosed with SARS-COV-2 acquired only mild and reversible symptoms.Hence it was concluded that SARS-COV-2 could be diagnosed in those pets that live in collaboration with the people infected with COVID 19.
