Cystic fibrosis patients may want to limit pet contact

In patients with cystic fibrosis, Aspergillus fumigatus can cause a hypersensitivity fungal lung disease when it colonizes lung tissue, associated with decreased lung function and development of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis. A nationwide German survey was conducted from 1,232 patients from thirty-one German cystic fibrosis centers in 2018. The study found that Aspergillus fumigatus was not associated with frequent pet contact. However, results of the study also showed an increased prevalence of, and possible risk factor for, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis in patients with significant pet contact. Patients with recurrent onset of allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis should be evaluated in terms of frequent pet contact.
