Cannabis treatments popular for dogs and humans

Literature and social media have both shown an increase in the interest of using cannabis to treat a person’s own pain and even their dog’s pain. An anonymous online survey was used to collect data for 313 people using cannabis for their own chronic pain, and 204 dogs whose owner gives them cannabis products to treat their pet’s chronic pain. The most popular reason for using cannabis products on themselves or their dogs was due to the belief that it was a good treatment and is a natural alternative to conventional medicine. Survey results also showed that expectations when using cannabis were met, such as pain reduction, sleep improvement, and increased overall well-being, among others. More evidence is needed in order to properly evaluate the objective biomedical as well as subjective socioemotional benefits of cannabis for chronic pain management in humans and dogs.
