As a common inflammatory disorder in canine nasal cavitites of unknown etiology, a diagnosis of chronic idiopathic lympoplasmacytic rhinitis (CILPR) is made when other causes of nasal disease are excluded and specific therapy protocols are lacking.

Twenty-five dogs with CILPR were included in this prospective study. This study aimed to evaluate improvement of respiratory signs after treatment for gastrointestinal signs.

It was revealed that 13 dogs had concurrent gastrointestinal signs, and 22 dogs had endoscopic gastrointestinal lesions, the majority of them graded as moderate or severe. No significant associations were found between treatment and follow-up, although remission or improvement of respiratory signs was seen in the majority of dogs treated only for gastrointestinal signs.

A cautionary procession of therapy is used when interpreting improvement in nasal clinical signs, due to the need for additional studies that could explore the possibility of a cause-effect relationship between the nasal and upper digestive tract processes.
