Tips when using antimicrobial shampoos for skin disease

Antimicrobial shampoos are excellent tools for managing many dermatological issues, but only if chosen wisely and used correctly. Client education is extremely important when trying to get the most out of your topical selection. Encourage your clients to use these tips to help get your dermatology patients on the right track:

  • Luke warm water should be used when bathing a patient so as to not further irritate the skin

  • Apply the product liberally and massage the shampoo well onto the skin and coat

  • Never use a stiff bristle brush or hard glove when working shampoo into the coat

  • Allow for the shampoo to contact the skin and coat for at least 5-10 minutes before rinsing

  • You can instruct you client to towel dry or dry gently with a hair dryer
