Researchers evaluated thirty-two client own dogs with brain tumor associated seizures. Eighteen of the dogs received medical treatment and radiotherapy and fourteen received medical treatment alone.

In the group that received radiotherapy, the duration of time between seizure episodes was longer and also the dog’s survival times were longer as well, with a mean of 24 months versus 1.7 months in the control group.

Five dogs were euthanized during the study period because of non seizure related issues. In the control group, recurrence of seizures was observed before death in all dogs.

The pathophysiological mechanisms of epileptogenesis and the effect of radiation therapy on seizure control are unclear to date. Further prospective studies are needed.
