Evaluation of Cannabis tolerance in Beagle-cross dogs
A study was conducted to examine the pharmacokinetics (PK) and safety of Cannabis herbal extracts (CHE) in healthy Beagle-cross dogs.
This study was performed in two phases and eight weeks apart. CHE was administered at low, medium, and high doses, and then PK was evaluated. The results showed that CBD and THC were absorbed rapidly, and their concentrations increased in a dose-dependent manner. It was not proportional to the amount of cannabinoid exposure relative to the dose increase.
Some neurological signs were hyperesthesia or proprioceptive deficits were noted in the group that received higher doses. The severity of the signs confirmed correlation with plasma cannabinoid concentrations. However, dogs seem to tolerate cannabinoid effects after several CHE doses, with fewer signs seen after the final dose amount.
Dogs tolerated CHE at low and medium doses, but at high doses, dogs had neurological signs. The increase in plasma cannabinoid concentrations with increasing doses was not proportional due to different product composition and bioavailability.
