Update on bovine viral diarrhea virus by veterinary internists

An entire decade has passed since the last consensus statement came out regarding the bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV). Much has remained the same with protocols, such as clinical signs, pathogenesis including persistent infection, and diagnosis.

The greatest improvements have come from research since 2010 regarding the difficulties associated with control of the bovine viral diarrhea virus. This virus has a unique ability of maintaining persistent infection in cattle, which despite advancements has allowed it to remain fairly elusive.

This consensus statement update on bovine viral diarrhea virus focuses on changes in viral subpopulations, heterologous hosts, immunosupresion, as well as vaccination protocols.
