Salmonella enterica isolated from dogs in Texas
Using whole genome sequencing, this study aimed to fully characterize Salmonella isolates from a previous cross-sectional study of Texas shelter dogs and assess their relatedness.
Antimicrobial resistance genes were found in 15% of isolates, along with the fosfomycin resistance gene fosA7 in two isolates which, when this paper was published, had never been identified in published reports about Salmonella previously.
The most commonly identified serotypes were the Newport at 22% and Javiana at 15%, which were both widespread among the shelters. Evidence of shared genetic data between canine Salmonella and human clinical isolates suggests the presence of a shared pathogen population.
