Evaluation of cats post radioiodine therapy
Twenty-four client-owned hyperthyroid cats that underwent low-dose radioiodine therapy were evaluated for 12 months.
Results:
Fifteen of the 24 (63%) cats achieved euthyroidism following low-dose radioiodine treatment.
The incidence of hypothyroidism was 25% (6 ), of those three had decreased renal function with decreased glomerular filtration rates (GFR) and before developing azotemia in two.
Recommendations:
Research suggests that hyperthyroid patients should be monitored post radioiodine treatment for evidence of hyperthyroidism and decreased GFR.
