Efficacy of treatment for obstructive idiopathic cystitis

Fifty-one client-owned male cats with feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) were evaluated by researchers. After being discharge post inital treatment, 24 cats were treated for with phenoxybenzamine and alprazolam, and with low-dose meloxicam (0.025 mg/kg/day PO) and 27 cats were treated with phenoxybenzamine and alprazolam only.

Twelve (24%) cats experienced signs of recurrent FIC within 6 months. No difference in the cumulative incidence of UO within 6 months was detected with addition of meloxicam. All cats were alive at 6 months.

Study suggests that there is little clinical benefit with the addition of low-dose meloxicam to phenoxybenzamine and alprazolam treatment for 2 weeks after discharge.
