Can urea test strips be used in dogs?

A human urea test strip was evaluated to determine efficacy of evaluation of urea concentrations in dogs. Ten dogs were tested three times each. Salivary urea test strip scores and serum urea concentrations in dogs were assessed using the Spearman's correlation coefficient. A salivary urea test strip score greater than 4 was 57% sensitive and 96% specific for detecting a serum urea concentration greater than 7.4 mmol/L, which suggests that salivary and serum urea concentrations have a positive correlation.
