Looking for a side hustle or second career? Chances are you’ve accumulated skillsets that make you a subject matter expert.  Consulting is one way to provide additional income to repay student loan debt and put your unique set of problem-solving skills to good use. First, decide if you want to be a subject matter expert or an entrepreneur and business owner.  As a consultant you can work for a consulting firm as a subcontractor which enables you to focus entirely on individual projects or you can run your own business which requires additional effort in sales and marketing, tax and legal services in addition to doing the work.  Determining how much time and effort you have available for all of these tasks and where your genius zone lies can help you determine which route to take.

Beyond the stethoscope

As a veterinarian you may be wondering how to get involved with the startup world and excitement surrounding Silicon Valley.  You may even be finding yourself participating in the gig economy as a contractor for a veterinary startup as a practicing veterinarian.  To find out more about opportunities available in this fast-paced environment, start by networking in your local community and state.  Your state may have an Economic Development Commission or reach out to your local Small Business Administration office for additional information.  You can also search for keyword of startup in common job listing sites.  Find out when there are startup related networking events at your local college or university and plan to participate.  There are even websites that match candidates with job opportunities such as Angel List. Opportunities aren’t just on the coasts, there are amazing opportunities in the Midwest and across the U.S., just be prepared to work long hours, pivot quickly, and the pay may not be “what you are worth” to start.  The benefits of long-term career growth potential may outweigh the initial lack of work-life balance when starting with a fast-growing entrepreneurial venture.
