At least five dogs at the Oakland City Shelter have confirmed cases of canine influenza according to the Oakland Animal Shelter Services Director, Rebecca Katz.

Oakland Animal Services is working with several groups, including the University of Wisconsin’s Shelter Medicine Program and the University of California, Davis, to help investigate and contain the virus as quickly as possible.

Canine influenza H3N2 is a highly contagious virus that can shed in infected animals for almost a month. While it primarily affects dogs, other species, including ferrets and cats, are susceptible as well.

An earlier outbreak affected the Bay area in the early months of 2017.
