Getting to know Dr. Doug Kratt

Shortly after graduation from the University of Wisconsin College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Doug and his wife, Dr. Kimberly, purchased Central Animal Hospital in Onalska, Wisconsin. Within six years, they became a party of four with their addition of a son, Zack, in 2002 and a daughter, Madison, in 2004.  Seeing the struggles firsthand as a practice owner, Dr. Doug started on a mission to make life better for veterinary professionals through his involvement with Wisconsin VMA, first as President and later as an elected Delegate.  Now, he joins Dr. Gary Brown in the race for the Presidency of the AVMA.

If I wasn’t a vet: If I wasn’t a veterinarian, I would be a software developer.  I have always had a keen interest in data integration.

Best career advice I received:  Find a great mentor.  My mentor was the late Dr. Rena’ Carlson. She was an incredible professional and was always a positive influence on my life.  Her energy was unmatched.

Three qualities that got me where I am today: The three qualities that have made me the person I am today is perseverance, drive, and compassion.

Most agonizing career decision:  After vet school, I passed on a chance to complete a  residency program.  Instead,  I purchased a practice.  It was a tough decision for me and I initially thought I would regret it, but now I understand it was the best decision I ever made.  I am very happy as a practice owner and being a part of my community.

Moment I felt I made it:  The day I signed the paperwork for my practice.  I have always dreamed of owning my own business.

Easiest career decision I made: Getting involved in the Wisconsin VMA was the easiest career decision I ever made.  I am passionate about making the veterinary world a better place and I want to help lead that change.

How I made my first dollar:  When I was in high school, I cleaned locker rooms to earn extra money. That is how I learned my impressive kennel cleaning skills.

How I clear my head after a bad day:  After a bad day, I pop headphones in, listen to 80’s rock, and go on a long walk.  For me, exercise helps me clear my mind and focus on what is really important.

The person I most admire is:  My wife, Dr. Kimberly Kratt is the person I most admire. I have no idea how she does it all. She works hard as a veterinarian in our practice but she still makes time for our family.  She is smart, incredibly funny, and a wonderful mother to our two kids.  I am simply in awe of her.

On top of my bucket list:  I hear great things from my colleagues about Mission Rabies’ campaigns vaccinating dogs throughout Africa and India. I would really enjoy being a part of their volunteer veterinary team. Mission Rabies is really making a difference for the better, and as a father, I could only imagine the heartbreak of losing a child to this horrible disease.
