Prevents diabetes
Your pancreas is responsible for releasing insulin into your body to help control blood sugar levels. When your pancreas stops working, or doesn't work as well, you develop a disease called diabetes. A 2016 study found that those who walked every day developed glucose tolerance 6 times greater than that of runners.
What that means in that the body of those who walk every day is able to absorb sugar (and thus have more stable blood sugar levels) than that of other people—including those who run.
Reduces your risk of dying from colon cancer
Another land mark study found that those who walked for 30 minutes a day were less likely to die of colon cancer than those who didn't. It's never too late to start either. The study found you still got a protective effect if you began walking after a cancer diagnosis.
It doesn't just reduce your risk of dying if you do get cancer, it also reduces your risk of getting colon cancer in the first place.
Decreases signs of aging
Walking 30 minutes a day can do amazing things for your body, and we're not just talking fine lines and wrinkles. Studies have shown that 30 minutes of walking a day can actually increase the number of telemores on your DNA. Telemores are the part of your DNA that shorten as you age, which makes walking a way you really can live longer.
Reduces Back Pain
Most of us have experienced a sore back at least once in a while. 30 minutes of walking can reduce back pain over time, by reducing weight on your back through weight loss, increasing blood flow to the spine, and minimizing impact from exercise.
Walking has been shown to give the same benefits of aerobic exercise, without the drawbacks of high impact training. It's considered one of the best ways to exercise if you have a sore back.
Prevents heart disease
Heart disease kills hundreds of thousands of people every year. While there are many different things that cause heart disease, a recent study focused on women over the age of 60 found that the more women walked, the less likely they were to be hospitalized for heart failure.
How hard they worked out did not appear to have an impact on whether they would be hospitalized or not. Even a gentle walk was sufficient to get the protective effects, with a minimum of 30 minutes a day needed.
